Meet Representative Rick Cheatum

Born and raised on a farm in western Kansas, I learned the value of hard work, integrity, and community from an early age. In 1977, I made the move to the great state of Idaho, finding a new home and a place to continue my journey.

Armed with a Bachelor of Science in broadcast journalism from the University of Kansas, I embarked on a diverse professional journey. From radio broadcasting to automobile sales, and eventually credit unions, I gained a wealth of experience in different sectors.

Upon my retirement in 2017, I chose to dedicate my time and energy to public service. Elected to the Pocatello City Council in both 2017 and 2021, I currently hold the esteemed position of Council President. In this role, I also serve as the council liaison to crucial entities such as the Pocatello Airport Commission, Bannock Transportation Planning Organization, Pocatello Development Authority, and Historic Downtown Pocatello.

Beyond the City Council, I proudly represent the region as a director of the Association of Idaho Cities. Additionally, my involvement with the Bannock County GOP as a precinct committeeman and past treasurer underscores my commitment to upholding conservative values.

Community engagement has always been a cornerstone of my life. I've had the privilege of serving as a member and past president of Portneuf Valley Partners, as well as the Chamber Chiefs. My tenure as a former board member and board chair at Idaho Central Credit Union speaks to my dedication to financial stewardship.

Recognition from esteemed organizations further fuels my commitment to service. I'm honored to have received accolades like the Pocatello-Chubbuck Chamber of Commerce Volunteer of the Year and the Idaho State University College of Education Volunteer of the Year. Additionally, the Award of Merit from the Region 5 supervisor for Idaho Fish and Game stands as a testament to my contributions to wildlife conservation efforts.

Outside of the political arena, I'm an avid hunter, shooter, and reloader, finding solace and passion in the outdoors. Family is at the heart of all that I do, and I am grateful for the support of my wonderful wife, Debra, with whom I've shared 32 years of marriage. Together, we cherish our blended family, including my daughter Nicole and step-son Tony.

In 2022, I was entrusted with the privilege of representing District 28, Seat A in the Idaho House of Representatives. This district encompasses Franklin, Power, and portions of Bannock County. As a Republican with a moderate conservative approach, I firmly believe in the power of local governance and equitable resource allocation. Serving on the Taxation and Revenue, Local Government, and H/R and Commerce committees, I champion policies that resonate with the needs of our constituents.
